Erwin Burkhalter, second son of Charles and Magdalena Burkhalter, was baptized in 1823 at the Egypt Reformed Church in Whitehall Township. He grew up in Upper Milford Township, where his father was a farmer and a tanner.
Erwin married Sarah Marks on May 23, 1847. They had three sons and a daughter.
Erwin is listed in his father's household in Upper Milford in the 1850 census, without his wife and son Edwin. He was appointed postmaster of Dillingerville in 1851, a position that he held until 1858, when he was appointed postmaster of Coopersburg. In 1859 "Irvin" Burkhalter was one of the executors of the will of his father-in-law John Marck, and in 1862 he was executor of his father's will.
In 1875 Erwin brought his family to Montgomery County, Missouri, where he died in 1897. His widow Sarah died in 1905 and is buried next to him at the Wellsville Cemetery.
