Alvin went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, April 11, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his family, following a sudden illness.

Alvin Sims was born May 10, 1917, in Sevierville, Tenn., son of the late Luther and Josie (Lethco) Sims.

Alvin was employed by the city of Sandusky, and worked for Oakland Cemetery where he retired after many years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 83 and VFW Post 2529, Sandusky Eagles, and a new member of the AMVETS, joining at the age of 95. In his spare time he loved garage sales, meeting new people and spending time with his family.

Alvin is survived by his children, David (Mary) Sims, of Sandusky, Roy (Ginger) Sims, of Huron, Diana (Bob King) Sims, of Sandusky, Linda (Kevin) Eck, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; stepchildren, Thomas and Gary Tarring, of Sandusky, Sandra Tarring, of Conneaut, Ohio; his siter, Hazel Case of Tennessee; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Marie (Spohn) Sims; his parents; and his three siblings, Mayfield Sims, Florence Eledge, and Rosie Hurst.

Family and friends will be received 4-7 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Groff Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 15. A luncheon will follow services at the American Legion, 3615 Hayes Ave., Sandusky. Burial will follow in Sand Hill Cemetery.
