| Birth: | Jan. 18, 1782 | | Death: | Oct. 24, 1852 |  US Statesman. He worked to perserve the Union in the years leading up to the Civil War, and supported the Compromise of 1850. He was a member of the Senate's "Great Triumvirate" along with Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. He is believed by many to be one of the Senate's greatest orators, and he is sometimes refered to as the "Great Orator." He was also Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore, and an accomplished jurist. (bio by: Jennifer)
