Kenneth Secrest Sr.
UNADILLA — Kenneth H. Secrest Sr., 87, of 809 State Highway 7, Unadilla, went to be with his Lord on Saturday morning, June 9, 2001, at the New York State Veterans Home, Oxford.
He was born May 28, 1914, in China, N.Y., the son of the late Frank and Ella Cary Secrest.
Ken graduated from the Deposit High School. After high school, Kenneth worked on his father's farm and later at Scintilla in Sidney, until he enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country during World War II. He was with the 619 Engineers in the Pacific building roads and airplane runways.
He and his buddies had many reunions in the following years all over the United States. After the end of WW II, Ken returned to the work at E.C.D. of Bendix, Sidney, as a machinist. He retired in 1979 after completing 48 years with the company.
Kenneth also worked as an insurance agent with Nationwide Insurance Company for 18 years. In his later years, he sold for the Cherry Valley Insurance Company and served on its Board of Directors for several years.
On July 27, 1947, he married Mary Whitman in Oneonta.
He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Sidney, where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees. Ken had memberships in Masonville Lodge #606 and Sidney Lodge #801 F.&A.M. He had served as Master in both lodges for several times as well as their District Deputy. Mr. Secrest also was a member in the Sidney-Masonville-Ouleout Lodge #255 O.E.S. and Unadilla Lodge #179, where he served as Patron and District Lecture for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Secrest, Unadilla; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Sherry Secrest Jr., Unadilla; three granddaughters, Amber Brite, Crystal Ley and Jem Marie Secrest, all of Unadilla; brother and sister-in-law, Francis and Margie Secrest, Afton; two sisters and brother-in-law, Gert Huyck, Sandy Creek, and Charla and Edwin Brych, Clifton Park; sister-in-law, Carol Secrest, Rome; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His two brothers, Frederick and Harold Secrest, predeceased him.
He loved his dogs, his latest being Cookie.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2001, from the First Baptist Church, Sidney, with the Rev. David Fraher, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla. Friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. followed by Eastern Star Services at 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Veterans Home Memorial Fund, Oxford, N.Y. or to the First Baptist Church, Sidney, N.Y.
