| Birth: | Aug. 16, 1827 | | Death: | Dec. 24, 1894 | Educator. Born in London, the eldest of ten children, she taught at school with her mother, with whom, when she was eighteen, she opened a school at Kentish Town in North London. In the evenings, she studied French, German and Geography at Queen's College. In 1850, she founded the North London Collegiate School for Ladies, which continues to this day at Canons Park in Edgware, although the "for Ladies" has been dropped from the title. In 1874, she founded the Association of Headmistresses and served as its first President for twenty years, until she was forced to resign due to the kidney ailment which was to kill her. She was succeeded by Dorothea Beale. A biography of the two, "How Different From Us", by Josephine Kamm, was published in 1958. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
