Henrietta was the seventh of eight children whose parents were Jakob Smidt (1791 Germany - 1881 IL) and Frauke Degrave (1806 Germany - 1874 IL). She was born either in Simonswolde (as per her death certificate) or Rorichum as other sources suggest. She came to IL from Germany in 1856. She married George B. Dannen in Forreston, IL on 29 Mar 1870. In 1878 they moved to Marshall county, Iowa where there were other Dannen family members. They moved to Linn county, Oregon in about 1911, bring most of their younger children as well. Henrietta and George had 10 children, two of them dying in their infancy and 7 of them producing children.
