A Mass of Christian Burial for the Rev. John Francis Cody, 78, a Winona diocesan priest who had served parishes in Rochester, Austin and Claremont, and several other area communities, will be concelebrated at 7 p.m. Wednesday in St. Andrew Catholic church in St. Paul. The Very Rev. Michael Hoeppner, administrator of the Winona Diocese will preside. Assisting will be the Revs. Bernard Kerrigan, James Speck and Nicholas Cody. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Hugo, Minn., at 11 a.m. Thursday.
John "Jack" Cody was born Nov. 7, 1919, in St. Paul. He began his studies for the priesthood in Nazareth Hall minor seminary in St. Paul, then studied for a year at the Dominican House of Studies in River Forest, Ill., and completed his theologial studies in 1949 at St. Thomas Seminary in Denver. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Winona on June 4, 1949, in the chapel of Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester. His first assignment began as an assistant at St. Augustine Parish in Austin. Over the next 39 years, he served St. John's Church in Rochester, St. Patrick's Church in West Albany, St. Clements in Hammond, St. Vicent de Paul in West Concord and St. Frances de Sales in Claremont, where he retired in 1987. He also served parishes in Westbook, Jeffers, Janesville, Josco, Geneva, Ellendale, Owatonna, Medford and Deerfield, all in the Diocese of Winona.
He had an avid interest in sports and said his most rewarding time as a priest was the 10 yars he worked with migrants at Hollandale. During his retirement, he assisted pastors during absences and his younger brother, a priest in the Archdioceses of St. Paul/Minneapolis.
Surviving are: three sisters, Mary (Mrs. Robert) Kurtz and Alis (Mrs. Robert) Mitsch, both of St. Paul, and Joan (Mrs. Earl) Vierling of Little Canada, Minn.; and two brothers, Patrick of Shoreview, Minn., and the Rev. Nicholas Cody of Cross Lake, Minn.
Friends may call Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Roseville Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and prior to the Mass Wednedsay evening.
The family prefers memorials of the donor's choice.
