Laird of Caskiebenfrom The Ancestry of William and John Johnston by Lorand V. Johnson, MD:

"John Johnston the last of the great lords of That Ilk and of Caskieben, ruled his domain from 1593 until 1613, discharging the duties of his station in a manner fully accordant with the supposition of his having, when in early manhood, acted the part of a father to the 12 younger brothers and sisters who were left under his guardianship, and of his own 11 children."

"John Johnston married first, Janet, daughter of Turing of Foveran, by whom he had two sons and two daughters. His eldest son, George succeeded him, and carried the title 'of that Ilk', one of the most ancient in Scotland. It is by this alliance that all the existing branches of the family of Johnston of the Ilk trace their descent from the ancient kings of Scotland. John had by his second wife, [Katherine Lundie] two sons and two daughters."
