John J. "Jack" Gillespie Jr., 74, of Mesa, Arizona, originally of Grand Island, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at his home in Mesa with his family at his side.
Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 12th at St. Leo's Catholic Church with Father Charles L. Torpey and Father Thomas Lux officiating. Inurnment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.
Jack was born July 21, 1938 at Tilden, NE, to John J. Sr. and Elizabeth (Carraher) Gillespie.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alyce Mae Gillespie, on April 14, 2007.
Survivors include their children, sons, Mark (Kim) Gillespie of Holdrege and John III (Tracy) Gillespie of Grand Island; daughter, Lori Devore (Kevin Webster) of Mesa; and sister, Teresa LaBute of Omaha.
Also left to cherish his memory are four grandchildren, Brittany (Paul) Vieth and Jaci, Jenna and Jill Gillespie; step grandchildren, Jake and Jordyn Rhoads; and a special friend, Darlene Damron.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Lindsay Gillespie; grandson, Scott Gillespie; brother, Jim Gillespie and sister, Betty .
Jack grew up in Tilden, graduating from Tilden High School in 1956. He was united in marriage with Alyce Mae Schroeder on August 20, 1958 in Neligh, NE. They lived most of their 48 years together in Grand Island, before moving to Mesa.
Jack was baptized at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Tilden and was a member and board member of St. Mary's Catholic Church while in Grand Island. In Mesa, Jack was head usher at Holy Cross Catholic Church.
In 1960, Jack began his employment with Bankers Life Nebraska, becoming General Agent for central Nebraska in 1968. He consistently had the top five agencies in the company and qualified every year for the Bankers Life Nebraska convention.
He was President of Grand Island Life Underwriters and received the Series 7 Mutual Funds License. He was a longtime member of the Saddle Club and Platt Deutsche, American Legion, Elks, and past governor and member of East Mesa Moose Lodge #2082. Jack enjoyed shuffleboard and was a shuffleboard member of Sunland Village Coyote League.
Jack also enjoyed his time spent at the cabin at Johnson's Lake. He loved to entertain and was an avid Husker fan.
