Tom was born March 25, 1919 to Cecil and Jean Atherton in Danville, IL and later moved to Boone, IA where he graduated from high school. He attended Iowa State College earning a B.S. Degree in Architectural Engineering. Tom was employed by the architectural firm Karl Keffer Associates which eventually became Atherton, Dean, and Herbert. Tom was a World War II Army Veteran and was proud of his military service. He also was involved with the Masons and Shriners.
