Louis Alexander Wells is the son of Jonah Whitfield Wells 1848-1924 and Mary Jane Grace Wells 1852-1880.
He went by the name of Alex or Elic.
Alex was married to Lucy Ann Dickerson on 13 Aug 1891 in Christian County, Kentucky. They lived the majority of their married life in District 8, which is the Crofton area.
Alex and Lucy had three known children to this union, Roberta Wells 1892-1968, Alvin Samuel "Big Sam" Wells 1895-1955, and Ivy Wells 1898-1925.
Alex was apparently a rough ole man.
On 13 Jan 1914, the Hopkinsville Kentuckian reports the following (summarized):
During a card game in the Haley's Mill area, Lucian Wilson rushed on Alex Wells with a 6 foot stick. Wells protected himself by drawing a knife and he cut Wilson from the back of his neck almost to his throat. Alex Wells was arrested by two citizens and turned over to Deputy Sheriff Johnson in Kirkmansville.
27 Jan 1914: Alex Wells was held under a $5000.00 bond for cutting Lucian Wilson.
24 Mar 1914: Alex Wells was acquitted for the malicious cutting of Luther Wilson.
02 Oct 1917: Alex Wells was found guilty for shooting Stanley Dukes and sentenced to one year in the penitentiary.
19 Apr 1920: Alex Wells was killed in the Grissom's Chapel area. Stanley Dukes and Alex had been enemies for several years. Duke shot 9 times, killing Alex instantly. It was unclear if Wells ever drew his weapon.
Apr 1920: Self defense was claimed, Dukes on $5000.00 bond. Dukes is in jail.
He told the sheriff that he walked up to where Dukes and two other men were playing cards and Wells threatened him. Wells tried to draw his weapon, but it got hung in his clothing. Dukes said he drew his own weapon and began firing.
30 Apr 1920: Stanley Dukes, who shot and killed Alex Wells, waived examining trial in County Court Thursday afternoon and was held under $5000.00 bond. He is to answer to the grand jury at the June term of circuit court. He gave bond and was released.
