Captured at Union City, TN, on 3/24/1864, he spent time in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Bennett died on 10/20/1864 (or 10/8/1864) of scurvy in a prison hospital in Savannah, GA, awaiting exchange. He is on the NY Times Savannah death list as dying on the earlier date that the date in the muster roll.
His wife applied for a widow's pension in 1867. A minor child applied for a pension in 1871 with A. R. Givens as guardian. On the 1883 list of pensioners, Martha is listed as living in Hollow Rock, TN, and receiving $8 per month compensation.
