He was born at Aberdeen, the son of James Smith, Nursery and Seedsman, and Patience Austin.
He arrived aboard the "British Ship Arkwright" at the port of New York on 4 May 1835, age 14, Gardener, with his father James Smith 57, Seedsman, mother "Mrs Smith" 50, and four siblings.
They initially settled at Winterbourne, Woolwich township, Waterloo County, Ontario. A few years later his father bought land in Brantford township, Brant County: 100 acres at concession II, lot 28, and they moved there.
He worked on his father's farm and nursery in Brantford township.
