The daughter of Benson and Lucinda Childs, Mary Jane Childs was born in December 1849- presumably in Grant County, Wisconsin. On July 28, 1867 she married Civil War Veteran, Samuel J. Burlock at Wauzeka, Crawford County, Wisconsin. The wedding took place in the home of William H. Burlock, Samuel's older brother. At the time this marriage took place, Samuel was a widower with two sons. He and Mary Jane would go on to have two additional children: Gertrude Ann Burlock Howell and Frederick Warren Burlock.
By 1880 the Burlock family had migrated west, taking up land in Dakota Territory. By 1885, this same land was now a part of Ispwich, Edmunds County, North Dakota. It was here that they would remain for the rest of their lives.
