SMITH, Dorothy Alene (Age 94) Went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus on Saturday March 30, 2013. Dorothy was born April 12, 1918 in Manasquan, N.J. to parents Halbert and Clarabelle Hayes. Dorothy was raised in Beach Haven, N.J. along with her younger brothers and sister- Charles, Norma and Neal (only surviving sibling).
Dorothy was predeceased in 1992 by her husband of 45 years Harry G. Smith.
Surviving Dorothy are daughters Nancy (Smith) Phillipy (Keith), Shelley (Smith) Lovell (Curt, deceased 1983), and Lilla (Kathy) (Smith) Burgess (Christopher), four grandchildren Matthew, Heather, Meagan and Todd, and one great-grandchild Oliver and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy grew up in a wonderful resort town on Long Beach Island, N.J. in a very loving family. She met many wonderful resort vacationers throughout her years living there. Dorothy met her handsome sailor husband Harry at the end of WWII in Philadelphia, PA. in 1945. They were married January 11, 1947 in Beach Haven, N.J. and then moved to Spokane, WA. to live and later raise their family.
Dorothy was active at Hillyard Baptist Church where she was a member. She was a Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher. She also enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader and grade school volunteer parent. Dorothy and her husband Harry enjoyed traveling back East with their daughters to visit family and sightseeing along the way. Dorothy and her family enjoyed many athletic events throughout the years supporting Shadle Park H.S., WSU, and the Spokane Indians. Spending time with family and friends was her favorite thing to do. Dorothy was a very loving wife, mother and friend. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends but is enjoying her new heavenly home with the Lord, Harry and Curt and their loved ones.
Dorothy's family would like to thank the staff at Royal Plaza Retirement Home and Avalon Nursing Home for the wonderful care she received there.
A memorial service for Dorothy will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on Friday, April 5, 2013 at 1pm, followed by a family and close friend graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial suggestions are for the Spokane Union Gospel Mission and the Spokane Humane Animal Society.
