William Salyer was the son of James Scott Salyer (1798-1863) and Elizabeth (Arnett) Salyer (1801-1837) who were both born in South Carolina. Elizabeth died in Fayette County, Indiana; and James died in Cass County, Indiana.

William's known siblings were:

William Salyer married Mary Jane Charlotte Smith in November 1851 in Franklin County, Indiana. They had one daughter who was born in Indiana:

Adeline/Adelia "Addie" (Salyer) Thurman 1847-1923

By 1860, the family had moved to Liberty Township of Macon County, Missouri, Post Office Bloomington:

William's father, James Salyer, and brother, John Salyer, both moved to Macon County, Missouri with William. William's mother, Elizabeth, had died in Indiana in 1837 so was not with them when they came to Missouri. William's father had remarried in 1841 in Franklin County, Indiana, to Mary J. Shepard. William's father died in 1863 during a visit back to Cass County, Indiana. He suffered a fall which caused head trauma. In the 1870 census, William's step-mother Mary J. (Shepard) Salyer was living with him and his family in Macon County, Missouri:

William died in 1893 and his wife Mary in 1896 in Macon County, Missouri, and are both buried in Bloomington Cemetery.
