Nell James Hayes, 75, founder of a unique ranch in the El Cerrito area, died Saturday at Circle City Hospital. He and his wife, Zeal, came here over 20 years ago and began transforming their acreage into the Circle H Ranch. It is in a small valley east of, Compton Avenue. Hayes was born in 1895 in Chicago, and came here from Miami. He was active in the United Fund, Corona Chamber of Commerce and other civic activities. Surving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Mary Lawrence of Corona, and Jane Barbier of Palm Springs; a granddaughter; and a brother. The Hayes' ranch is unusual in that the couple built three lakes on it, one with an island in the center. The first lake was stocked with fish and features an Oriental shelter on the shore. The second lake contains the island and on, the island is a nepa hut, shipped from the Philippines by Mrs. Barbier and her husband some years ago.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thomas Miller Mortuary with entombment following at Crestlawn Memorial Park. Friends may call after 2 p.m. tomorrow.
