SOHMER WINSTON-SALEM - Dr. Marcus Frank "Buddy" Sohmer, Jr., 84, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, March 30, 2009. He was born June 15, 1924 in Danville, VA to Ilah and Frank Sohmer, Sr.

Dr. Sohmer graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1943. Upon graduation he joined the U. S. Navy where he was trained as a corpsman. He received his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1952. He completed his post-graduate work at Duke University and practiced gastroenterology and internal medicine for 35 years in Winston-Salem.

Buddy loved the practice of medicine, his family, his church, the beach and cars. He served as President of Forsyth County Medical Society, President of North Carolina Medical Peer Review Foundation, President of North Carolina Medical Society, and as a delegate for N.C to the American Medical Association, among other achievements. Locally he served as President of Medical Alumni Association of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and her husband, Frances and Wilson Moser of Salisbury, N.C.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; his children, Mark Sohmer and wife Karen of Winston-Salem, Beth Redpath and husband Peter of Wyndmoor, PA, Paige Gillespie and husband Bill of Richmond, VA, Louisa Sohmer of Winston-Salem; and 7 grandchildren, Penn, Scott and Cooper Redpath, Lauren and Hallie Gillespie and Evan and Katie Sohmer. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews; Bill and Joy Moser of Laurinburg, NC; Bob and Carolyn Moser and Barbara and David Safrit of Winston-Salem; Rebecca and David Beaver of Albemarle, NC; sisters-in-law Sammy and Darrel Garner of Boone, NC; Beth and Steve Lucas of Summerfield, NC.

The family will receive friends at home Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 o' clock. A memorial service will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 2, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Buddy has requested contributions to Class of 1952 Scholarship Fund at Bowman Gray Medical Alumni, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157 or to a charity of your choosing.
