Son of Henry Hiestand and Mary Sours, he
was born in the town of Berlin, Ontario
(name changed to Kitchener in 1917).

On May 29, 1849 in Berlin, Waterloo County,
he married first Mary Ann Benton (Oct. 1830-
Sept. 19, 1853). She was buried in First
Mennonite Church Cemetery in Kitchener,
next to her parents, William Benton and
Sarah Ann (Moxley) Benton.
They had a daughter, Josephine Augusta
Hiestand (Feb.3,1851-Aug.13, 1909) who died
while on a trip to Victoria, BC with her second
husband Wm. J. Melville and was buried there
in Ross Bay Cemetery.
She was first married to Jacob Lewis Martin
and had two daughters, Mary Augusta "Minnie"
and Sarah Ellen "Nellie". After a divorce she
married William J. Melville (Nov. 30, 1853-Mar.
7, 1941) ca1883-1884, horticulturalist/farmer,
native of London, England and s/o Christopher
P. Melville and Susanna Way. Josephine and
William lived in southern CA.
(Jacob Lewis Martin - ca1844-Oct. 6, 1925 -
died in Calgary, AB and was buried there in
Burnsland Cemetery, lot 69, block 2, sec. H)

After the death of his wife in 1853, Isaac
Hiestrand married Sarah A. Strickler (May 20,
1835-Aug. 8, 1920) native of Clarence, Erie,
NY, d/o Jacob Strickler and Catherine Correll.

They moved to Rockford, Winnebago County,
IL and lived at 814 N. Court St. Isaac was a
carpenter there. The family remained in
Rockford until about 1884/5 at which time
they relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The 1900 census for Grand Rapids indicates
that the family moved to the US about 1854
and that five of their six children were living
at that time.

Isaac Hiestand Passes Away at Advanced Age

Isaac Hiestand one of the well known old
settlers of Grand Rapids died at the family
home No. 6 Campbell place yesterday morning.
His death was the direct result of a paralytic
stroke which occurred last Wednesday. Mr.
Hiestand was born in Berlin, Canada in 1828
and came to Grand Rapids in 1880 when he
engaged in active business as a builder and
carpenter. He retired from active work about
twelve years ago and since that time has
been living with his children at No. 6
Campbell place.
The deceased is survived by a widow, Mrs.
Sarah Hiestand and five children, all of
whom live in the city.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon
at 3:00 p.m. at the family residence.
Interment will be at Valley City Cemetery.

south part of Oak Hill Cemetery)

(1) Benjamin Franklin "Frank" (1854-July 19,
1876) married Harriet Alferetta "Etta" Gipple
(June 11, 1854-Apr. 22, 1926) on Oct. 15,
1874 in La Crosse, WI. They had two children:
Charles (Nov. 1875-Jan. 20, 1876) and Benny
(1876-Aug. 1879). See memorial for - Harriet

(2) Henry S. (1856-June 6, 1916) married
Margaret Swindel. They are buried in Maple
Grove Cemetery, Van Buren County, MI.
They had four children (see their memorials).

(3) Martha Isabell "Mattie" (May 29, 1863-
July 1, 1935) married first Samuel A. Deter
(Oct. 18, 1857-Jan. 12,1951) on May 28, 1890
in Grand Rapids. The 1900 cenus said she had
one child but it was not living. The 1910
census said she had had two children but none
survived. The 1894 MI state census listed one
child, Ralph W.E. Deter aged 0 years.
After the death of Josephine Augusta
(Hiestand)(Martin) Melville in BC in 1909,
Mattie (now divorced) married her half-sister's
widower - William J. Melville on Nov. 15, 1909
in Grand Rapids. This couple is listed on the
1910 census in San Bernardino, CA and on
later census records in Orange County. Both
died there.

(4) Clara A. (May 21, 1865-Apr. 5, 1935)
married first a Mr. Hawkins and second Frank
N. Payne in Los Angeles, Jan. 2, 1906 (later
divorced).
Clara worked as a milliner in LA County and
died there.

(5) Flora (Feb. 1874-May 30, 1942) married
Dr. Henry Christopheer Fiebig (June 1868-
Sept. 12, 1954), a dentist in Grand Rrapids.
They had four known children.
