                  HE HUNG HIMSELF.
                                _____

An Inmate of the City Jail Takes His
                              Own Life.

People passing the city jail this morning were horrified to see the body of a man hanging against the inside railing of the cell. Closer inspection disclosed the fact that he had committed suicide by hanging, using part of a bed quilt for a rope. The cloth was knotted under the left ear and his feet just reached the floor, both hands tightly grasping the upright bars of the cell. The man had been dead some hours when found.
The suicide was placed in the jail on Wednesday evening by Chief Brockway who discovered in conversation with him that he was of unsound mind. He asked Mr. Brockway the time of day and being told it was noon he answered that there must be some mistake as he intended being in eternity by that time, and claimed his residence was in the hereafter. It was found that his name was Henry Bower and that he lived in Minneapolis before coming to Brainerd. He was a German, 26 years old and single, having no relatives in this country. He came to Brainerd June 7th [sic] and worked ten [sic] days for the Northern Mill Co. When Chief Brockway arrested him he begged him for his revolver with which to kill himself.
Bower was to have been examined before the probate court this afternoon as to his sanity. An inquest will be held this afternoon. (Brainerd Dispatch, 10 June 1892, p. 1, c. 3)
