Edith Margot Nichols dies at 76; long a volunteer

ELMIRA--Edith Marguerite "Margot" Nichols died at home April 19 after a short battle with a malignant brain tumor. She was born March 1, 1921 in Granthem's Landing, British Columbia to George and Edith Gatter. She attended schools in B.C. where she was involved in scouting. She worked for McGavin's Bakery and Boeing in Vancouver, B.C.

While returning from a holiday on Prince Rupert Island, she met her future husband, Ralph Nichols. They were married in Anchorage, Alaska March 17, 1945, where their three daughters were born. While in Anchorage, they were partners in Bert's Drug Store and owned the first Dari Delite in Alaska. In 1959 the Nichols family moved to Oregon where they lived for two years before moving to California for two years. They then moved to their home on Territorial Road where they have since lived.

Margot was a cook at Elmira Grade School for a short time. She and her husband owned and operated the Fern Ridge A&W and Roller Rink, the Ralmar restaurant in Eugene, Crafts Galore in the West Lane Shopping Center. During the 1970s and 1980s Margot and Ralph also managed motels in British Columbia and Oregon.

Margot was a founding member of the Applegate Trail Days and currently held the office of treasurer. She was also the president of Fern Ridge Lions, a member of the Neighborhood Watch and the Franklin Grange, a volunteer at Elmira Grade School and with the Smart program at Veneta Grade School. In her spare time, Margot enjoyed gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reading and traveling. She had traveled to Hawaii, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Okinawa, Korea, and numerous mainland states.

Margot is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Larry Kau of Elmira, Beverly Nichols of Heidelberg, Germany, and Linda Nichols of Elmira; six grandchildren and spouses, Brian and Michelle Kau of Lorane, Alvin and Chris Kau of Eugene, Dawn and Trevor Robinson of Eugene, Alicia and Tori Nichols of Germany; five great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Linsey and Haley Kau of Lorane, and Alex and Heather Kau of Eugene; one sister, Mollie Dakin of Nanaimo, B.C., and three brothers, Bob, Frank and Ron Gatter of B.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, her parents, and one brother, Fred Gatter.

A service was held April 23 at Lane Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, with burial in Lane Memorial Gardens.
