Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Gotland, Sweden, he enlisted in the Union Army in New York as a Major and Aide-de-Camp in May, 1861. On June 27, 1862, at Gaines Mill, Virginia, while voluntarily serving as aide-de-camp, U. S. Volunteers, he successfully and advantageously charged a position of Confederate troops under fire and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions, date of issue: August 23, 1893. He also served as Colonel in command of the 20th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry and was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war he relocated to Stockholm, Sweden where he remained until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
