William Ross MacDonald

Death: May 28, 1976

Canadian Politician. William 'Ross' MacDonald held two high positions within Canadian politics. He was the Solictor-General of Canada 1954-1957 and later he served as Ontario's 21st Lieutenant Governor July 4, 1968, to April 4, 1974. He was born in Toronto and attended the University of Toronto Osgoode Hall. He was first a lawyer then a politician. He served in WWI and was seriously injured in the Battle of Somme. He served as a member of Parliament 1935-1953, the Speaker of the House of Commons 1949-1953, a Senator 1953-1967, the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate 1957, and in 1974 he was appointed officer of the Order of Canada. In 1964 he was appointed as Chancellor for the Waterloo Lutheran University. In 1974 the Ontario School for the Blind was renamed the W. Ross MacDonald School. (bio by: Scott Buschlen)
