Son of Rev. Thomas and Emma Allan of Perth, Western Australia. He was educated at a public school and enrolled in a business college for a term. He joined the Bank of Fremantle, Western Australia on 10 April 1910 and was transferred to Perth in May of the following year and then to Kalgoorlie in August 1914. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 3 February 1915 and embarked from Fremantle for active service abroad on 26 April 1915 per HMAT "Hororata" (A20). After the Somme battle in July 1916, in which he took part, he was recommended for a commission and proceeded to the Gales School of Instruction in Scotland. He was gazetted Lieutenant in October and rejoined his battalion in France. He was killed in action in the Battle for Polygon Wood, aged 23 years.
