Fred Axel Engstrom, son of Peter and Betsy Engstrom, was born May 17, 1880 at Stratford. The family moved to Hay Springs, Neb. and later to El Campo, Texas where he was reared and educated.
He was united in marriage to Mamie Sullivan in February, 1905 and they farmed in the El Campo area until 1919 when the family moved to Stratford, where he continued farming. In 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Engstrom retired and moved to Riverside, Calif. where they observed their golden wedding anniversary in February, 1955.
Since the death of his wife in 1961, Mr. Engstrom had made his home with his son, Lynn, and his family, spending the winter months with his daughter, Betty Taylor and her family in California.
He died at the home of his daughter in Hesperia, Calif. on April 27, 1970. Funeral services were held at Riverside, Calif. on April 30 with the Rev. Carl White officiating with burial in Crestlawn Memorial Park at Riverside.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Betty Taylor; his son, Lynn, of Story City; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews in Stratford and in Texas.
He was an active member of the Christian Church at Stanhope, later transferring his membership to Riverside, Calif.
