Sgt. Michael C. Cable, 26, of Philpot, Ky., died March 27, from injuries sustained when his unit was attacked by enemy forces in Shinwar District, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.
Michael was born on May 17, 1986, in Owensboro. He attended Berea College after graduating from Daviess County High School in 2004. Michael served for six years in the United States Army as an Artillery Forward Observer in the First Battalion, 327th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He loved spending time with his family and friends; he also enjoyed golf, poker, fishing, hunting, bonfires, being on the water, competitive sports, especially cross-country coached by Tony Rowe of Daviess County High School, and watching the Green Bay Packers.
He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Vickie Johnston of Owensboro; four sisters, Lisa M. (David) Osborne of Bluff, Tenn., Wendy M. Dickens of Owensboro, Kennedy F. Johnston of Owensboro, Idalis M. Johnston of Philpot, one brother, Raymond L. Johnston, Jr. of Owensboro; and Michael's best friend Matt Gray; one niece; four nephews; one great-niece; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home with Kevin Green officiating. Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Daviess County High School Cross Country, In Memory of Sgt.
