Mary Schumacher, the daughter of John P. and Juliana (Geffre) Schumacher, was born April 26, 1911, near Zeeland, N.D. Mary grew up and attended rural school in the Zeeland, N.D., area.
On November 24, 1931, she married Mike Vetter at St. John's Catholic Church near Zeeland, N.D. The couple then farmed in the Linton, N.D., area for four years and then moved to a farm near the Logan County Line. Two years later, they moved one mile north, where they farmed until 1968 when they moved into Napoleon, N.D.
Mike and Mary raised beef and dairy cattle, grew wheat, oats, barley, flax and corn. Mary had a very big garden in Napoleon, which kept her busy during the summer and fall. In the winters, Mary and Mike would work together on quilts for their children and grandchildren, who they would often visit on the spur of the moment. After the couple moved into Napoleon, Mike Jr. and his wife Diane and family lived and farmed on the family farm. Now, Mary's granddaughter Leicha and her husband Rick Quast and family are living on the family farm 14 miles south of Napoleon.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one infant son; two daughters, Pauline and Magdalena Vetter; four brothers; Sebastian Schumacher, Paul Schumacher, John Schumacher and Adam Schumacher; and three sisters, Magdalena Piatz, Katharina Kuhn and Maria Schaffner.
