Thomas Logan Reed Family
By Marie Stanphill Kercheval

My grandfather, Thomas Logan Reed, age 61,my step grandmother, Laura Akin Reed, age 48, their daughter Wanza June Reed and I came to Slaton from Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas. As we arrived at the train station the whistles were blowing and the bells were ringing – it was November 11, 1918, the day Armistice was declared.

My grandfather had sold his farm, near Van Alstyne, to Mr. Walter Neil. He received $214.00 per acre for his land. He bought a half section of land 3 1/2 miles southwest of Slaton for $35.00 an acre. The land had been owned by Joe Garland. There were two houses on the land and two windmills with small reservoirs to irrigate gardens. We made excellent crops in 1919 and the price was good. The next year my grandfather rented part of his land, he tended a large garden and milked two or three cows. He believed in diversified farming. He went into town once or twice a week, and he always tried to take as much produce to sell as he would have to buy to bring home. He usually had butter and eggs to sell and in the spring and summer he sold fresh vegetables. In the fall his specialty was late roasting ears and fine turnips. However, his main crops were cotton and grain.

My grandfather had a good speaking voice and made many public speeches. He was always superintendent of a Sunday School and took part in church and prayer meetings. My grandparents were charter members of the Slaton Methodist Church.

In December of 1922, my grandfather took very ill. He died three weeks later on January 8,1923.
A short time later my step grandmother, Wanza and I moved to town. Wanza and I attended school in Slaton and graduated in 1934. My step grandmother died February 26,1950.

Wanza married T.C.(Ted) Barnes, Cushman, Arkansas, April 5, 1940 in Slaton. Ted was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad and retired in 1975. They have two daughters and one son. Carolyn graduated from Slaton High School in 1960. She married Spencer Marley, Wellman, Texas, June 22, 1968. They have one daughter, Tonya age 6. Carolyn and her family live near Dallas. Elaine graduated from Slaton High School in 1962. She married Earl W. Gentry, Madison, North Carolina, November 2, 1963. They have two daughters, Susan, age 13 and Dana age 6.Elaine and her family live in Wolfforth, Texas. Earl is in the Air Force. He is stationed at Reese Air Force Base and is a Master Sergeant. Jackie graduated from Slaton High School in 1970. He received his degree in psychology from Texas Tech University in 1974 with Dean List honors. He is presently employed by the Department of Human Resources with child abuse in Floydada, Texas.

I married Ernest A. Kercheval, November 27, 1936. Ernest worked at McClintock Furniture Store, Kessel Department Store and C. R. Anthony & Co. before starting to work full time at Kertan Studio. Mrs. C. L. Tanner and I opened Kertan Studio. We were partners for severals. After Ernest started working at the studio we bought Mrs. Tanner's half of the business. We have one daughter, Beverly. She graduated from Slaton High School in 1958 and attended Baylor University for two years. Ernest died December 15, 1964. Beverly and I own and operate Kertan Studio.
