Paul Jackson Grad
age 104, beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, died Friday, January 25, 2013 after a short illness. During the eleven years before he died, he enjoyed living in his own apartment at American House on Carpenter Road, Ypsilanti, MI. Paul liked telling people that he was born in the town of Albuquerque in the territory of New Mexico in 1908. He grew up in Emporia, Kansas, where his father, Marcellus Grady, conducted the city band known as Grady's Band. When Paul was four years old, his father taught him to play the drum. After his father's death, Paul moved with his family to Flint, Michigan, where he attended Central High School. In the tenth grade, he impressed his future wife by playing a xylophone solo at a school assembly. In 1931, Paul graduated from Michigan State College, and he and MaryElla Decker were married in 1931. They raised three daughters in their home in the country, three miles south of Bishop Airport. Paul spent 39 years as a band and orchestra director in the Flint Public School System, 37 of those years at McKinley Junior High School. He also played percussion in the Flint City Orchestra and was choir director for both church choirs and the Nurses' Chorale. Paul retired from teaching in 1970 after which he and MaryElla enjoyed spending their winters in Lakeland, Florida. In 1981, they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, and, that same year, moved to Ann Arbor to be near children and grandchildren. They were able to celebrate their 63rd anniversary before Mary died in 1994. In his last years, Paul's mind remained sharp and he kept up with all the news, especially sports and the political scene. After he turned 21, he voted in every Presidential election, including November, 2012. Paul is preceded in death by his sisters and brothers, his daughter, Linda (Brad) Bechtel, Grandson, Grady Bechtel and his wife, MaryElla. He is survived by his daughters, Cara (Conn) Doane and Jan (Gerry) Leckrone, his grandchildren, Brad (Jane) Bechtel, Grady (Tammie) Doane, Autum (Drew) Lum, Kate Sigler, Linda (Joel Marshall) Leckrone, Avery Leckrone, and Josh (Stefanie Gilmour) Leckrone, and 12 great-grandchildren, Ben and Lauren Doane, Lurah and Tom Peterson, Libby and Grady Bechtel, Jordan Sigler, Connor and Aidan Lum, and Paul, William and Henry Marshall. A memorial service will be held on July 6, 2013 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ann Arbor, 4001 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, Ann Arbor, MI.
