Boy, 14, Drops Dead on Street
William Wesley Mumaw, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Mumaw of Riverview, a sixth grade pupil at the Sunshine school in the Wilson building, collapsed at 3:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the street on Elberon avenue at the old Hancock school and was pronounced dead a few minutes later on arrival at Good Samaritan hospital.
Dr. S. S. Daw, Muskingum county coroner, said death was apparently due to natural causes but added that the exact factor will not be known until laboratory reports are received. An autopsy was held last night.
The boy's mother said today that he had complained within the past month of having pain around his heart but at the time she thought it might have been induced by running. She also said that he had been subject to dizzy spells but blamed them on not wearing his glasses. The boy was handicapped by weak sight.
William Mumaw and his 12-year-old brother, Larry, both students at Sunshine school, were enroute home yesterday when the former was strickened (sic). They had been taken to the old Hancock school in a taxi and were enrout to a nearby grocery store to board a Washington township school bus to resume the trip home when the tragedy occurred.
Detective Captain Bernard Brenner and Detective Albert Durant, who conducted the investigation, said the two boys had dashed across the school yard with Larry in the lead. When Larry looked back, William had collapsed in the street.
Police said a passing motorist picked the boy up and placed him on the sidewalk.
The boy was taken to the hospital in a Hearing-Bryan-DeLong ambulance.
He was born Aug. 10, 1940 in Zanesville.
Surviving in addition to the parents are three brothers, Larry, Ricky and Terry Gene; two sisters, Diane and Judy; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Kaiser of 746 Amelia street and Mr. and Mrs. John Mumaw of this city.
The body was removed to Hearing-Bryan-DeLong funeral home.
The body will be taken to the home of the grandmother, Mrs. William Kaiser of 746 Amelia street, late this afternoon.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the home of the grandmother. Rev. Curtice Powell will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood.
