Harmon VanPetten an aged and respected citizen of this place passed away at 8:30 o'clock Sunday morning. He had been in feeble health for several months being confined to the house for about ten days. Mr. Van Petten would have been 77 years old the 10th of next month. He was one of fourteen children, six of whom are still Irving, his father lived to be 93 years old and his mother 97 years of age. In the death of Mr. Van Petten this place loses one of its most esteemed citizens. He was a kind and indulgent husband and a loving father and will be missed by a large circle of friends. He was born here where he has always resided Mr. Van Petten had a wonderful memory, he could recall from early years a connecting chain of events all through his life with but few links missing - not only personal matters but neighborhood happenings, political, national and social events with dates affixed. He was depended upon by his friends to help on misty and conflicting points. This ability remained with him in a remarkable degree until the fatal malady, the effect of which at last exhausted his strong vitality. He was much emaciated and enfeebled but retained his gaiety and his constitutionally sanguine disposition till within a few days of his death. Mr. VanPetten was thrice married and is survived by his widow and three sons, Harmon Jr. Willey and James, by three brothers, David R. and James of this place and Dr Minard VanPetten of Sterling, Kansas, by three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Lyon of this place, Mrs. Louise Marvin of Fair Haven and Mrs. G. W. Blackwell of Kankakee, Ill., and by several nephews and nieces. The funeral took
place from his late home residence Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. J. Sharpe assisted by the Rev. M. A. Soper both of Fair Haven officiated. Interment was made in the Sterling Center cemetery.
