"Tuesday morning a(b)out 5 o'clock, M. J. Beagle was found dead on the side walk at the south-east corner of the Masonic block at Otego, by Ann Mumford, who was going to work. Conditions showed he must have dropped dead during the early evening as he lay face down and still had his right hand in his coat pocket. His flash light and pipe lay close by his head. There was an abrasion over the right eye and the nose was broken, both probably the result of falling on the cement walk. Drs. Ford and Cooke were summoned and pronounced the result of death to be hemorrhage of the brain. Conditions showed there was no struggle and death must have been instantaneous. Mr. Beagle was a peace officer of the town and was about the streets during the evening, in his usual jovial manner and made no complaint of feeling other than in his usual good health. He was fifty-six years old and was born in the town of Milford, his parents moving to Otego when he was quite young, and he has always resided in the town, a much esteemed citizen. He was a widower and resided over the post-office. He is survived by three brothers, R. M. Beagle, of Otego, F. D. Beagle, of Albany and L. A. Beagle of New York City."
