Lieut. Roger Lakin Killed in Vietnam

Lieut. Roger Lakin, formerly of St. Joseph, was killed in a mid-air crash of two helicopters in Vietnam on Thursday, according to word received here by Herbert C. Iffert, a friend of the Lakin Family.

Young Lakin, a marine corps pilot, had been in the marines for two years. He was the son of retired Air Force Lieut. Col. and Mrs. Clarence A. Lakin, former St. Joseph and Wathena residents, who now reside at International Falls, Minn. Colonel Lakin’s wife was the former Miss Carolyn Kiehnhoff, Wathena.

Mr. Iffert was told all occupants of both helicopters were killed in the crash.

The Lakins resided at County Club Village here before Colonel Lakin was called back to active duty during the Korean War. He was employed by the Quaker Oats Co. here prior to that war.

The body of Lieutenant Lakin will be brought, in several weeks, to the Harmon mortuary, Wathena. Lieutenant Lakin, 24, was a graduate of Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia.
