Robert LaVon Baker, 87, of Baytown, was surrounded by his family when he passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013 at his home. Bob was born in Kansas City, Missouri on the 15th day of May, 1925, to Grover R. Baker and Nancy E. Ralston Baker.

In 1943, a former employee of Herident & Strickland Motor Co. in Marshall, MO, Bob volunteered in the United States Navy Auxiliary Air Squadron in Corpus Christi and Kingsville, TX, and was honorably discharged in 1946. An excellent painter, in 1956, he purchased McCune Paint Co. in Baytown. Later he built a small shopping strip on Sandy Lane, where he opened Baytown Paint & Carpet. Bob was a member of the Houston Gulf Coast Building and Construction Trade Council, and Painters Local 945. He was a 32nd degree Mason and dedicated Shriner, and endowed member of the Scottish Rite of Houston. In 1962, he became a Harris County Precinct 3 Deputy Constable. Bob escorted the football teams for both Lee and Sterling to home and away games. He was a volunteer firefighter at Station 4, where he served as Second Assistant Chief. Bob was also a Boy Scout leader with Troop 93. He enjoyed and loved his son, Rick, and daughter, Phyllis, and took the family camping, hunting and fishing. In 1987, he retired and later sold the center in 2005. He and his wife of 33 years, Jackie, traveled throughout the US extensively, mostly by motor home to Alaska, Vancouver Island, and Prince Edward Island. They were members of the San Jac Wheelers, where they met lifelong friends and their second family. He went white water rafting at the age of 80. An avid hunter, he once bagged a trophy 6 x 6, 1100 lbs. elk in Trinidad, CO.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, and their husbands Juanita and Loren Rinehart, Bernadine and Earl Strickland, and Wilhelma Faye "Billie" and Arnold Boisdrenghien, a 3 year old great grandson Joshua Sherman Ewell; stepmother, Betty Willis Andrews; stepsister, Delores J. Willis Barthé.

He is survived by his loving wife Jacqueline (Jackie) Baker; son, Ricky Lyn Baker; daughter, Phyllis Ewell, and husband, Ronnie; stepsons, Jerry Alexander, and wife, Connie, all of Baytown, and Alan Alexander, and wife, Melanie of Beach City; brother, Donald Baker, and wife, Carolyn of Baytown; grandchildren, Tami Baker, Ryan Baker, Jason Ewell, and wife Verginie, Alyson Ewell Case, and husband, Jason, Dallas Alexander, and wife, Michelle, Jacqueline Alexander Bohannon, and husband, Jonathan, Amanda Alexander, and Alan Alexander, Jr.; great grandchildren, Nathan Hasselbring, Caitlyn Baker, Saskia Ewell, Collin Case, Connor Case, Jasmine Alexander, Nathan Saxton, Brayden Bohannon, Bryson Bohannon and Christian Kade Brooddus; sister-in-law, Jydie D'Arnal, and husband, Alain Martin; brother-in-law, Daniel Blachuta; and numerous nieces, nephews and loving family members.

His family will receive friends Monday, March 25, 2013, at Crespo & Jirrels, 6123 Garth Road, Baytown, from 6 to 8 p.m. Service of Remembrance will be Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Crespo & Jirrels, Dr. Richard Steel, officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarcrest Cemetery.

For those desiring, his family request donations to the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer Association, The Shriners Hospital, or the Veteran of Foreign War.
