Born in Glen Ridge. Castelli joined the New York City Ballet in 1971 and danced with the company until 1990 when he retired as a dancer. In this time he danced most of the Balanchine and Robbins repertoire, creating roles in ballets for both of them. His roles include 'Agon', 'Divertimento 15', 'Emeralds', The Four Tempermants (Phlegmatic)', 'A Midsummer Nights Dream (Puck)', 'The Nutcracker (Candy Cane}', 'Prodigal Son (The Son)', 'La Sonnambula (The Poet', 'Stravinsky Violin Concerto', 'Vienna Waltzes' and 'Mozartiana' which was a role created on him but injury stopped him from dancing the premerie but after recovering he reclaimed this. This was his most memorable role. He continued to work as a ballet master after he retired. Died from complications of liver cancer.
