Donald C. Anderson, 86, died Monday, March 18, 2013 at Canton Good Samaritan Society. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Bethany Reformed Church in Canton under the direction of Rev. Perry Bauer of Redeemer Free Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton. Visitation will be Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton. Family will greet visitors from 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the church or organization of your choice.
Don was born August 12, 1926 in Canton, SD, to Clarence and Olga (Olson) Anderson. He attended school in Canton, graduating in 1944. While in school he was very active in all sports. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Following his discharge from the Navy he attended USD in Vermillion and St. Louis Mortuary School. He then joined his father and uncle in the family business at the funeral home and furniture store. He retired from the funeral home in 1997. Due to failing health, he had been a resident of Canton Good Samaritan Society since October 2011. Don and his family were very appreciative of the loving care he received while at Good Sam.
Don married Dorothy ‘Dotty' Frislie June 21, 1948 in Canton, where they made their home. Don was active in several community organizations, including- Canton Lion's Club, Canton Development Corp., Masonic Lodge, Canton School Board, Forest Hill Cemetery Assoc., VFW, and American Legion . He served as president of the South Dakota Funeral Directors Assoc. In his younger years he played and coached softball in Canton and refereed many high school games in the area. He enjoyed following his children and grandchildren in their school and sport activities. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, playing cards, and traveling. He was a member of Canton Lutheran Church and currently was a member of Redeemer Free Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dotty; three children- Marcia (Dave) Earll, John (Peg) Anderson, and Gary Anderson, all of Canton; seven grandchildren- Brad (Jill) Earll, Becky Earll, Courtney Earll, Meghan (Thad) Meister, Ashley (Josh) Vestal, Tom (Carissa Kelley) Anderson, and Chase Anderson ; four great-grandchildren- Laken, Landree, and Theo Meister and Brooklyn Earll. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Ryan Earll.
