Lily Kingcade Call

Birth: Dec. 19, 1892
Death: Jun. 2, 1980

Lily Call held 17 world records in deep sea fishing. There is an annual fishing tournament in Newport Beach that is named for her. The last time I checked, 2 of he records were still standing 30 years after her death. As Lily Kingcade, she was the "Billie Jean King" of her day in tennis (Long Beach High School & USC) and she was captain of the basketball team that won LBHS its first statewide trophy. She continued to play basketball, and coached basketball for many years, in addition to teaching math. USC used to write an annual article on her fishing exploits when she was an alumnus. The one I have tells how in 1978, at age 85, she landed a 151 lb. marlin in just 25 minutes a year after she had a pacemaker installed during open heart surgery. Lily was an exceptional natural athlete, and world famous.
