In 1889, President Benjamin Harrison appointed John Wanamaker as Postmaster General of the United States, an office he held until 1893. He is considered a pioneer merchant tycoon of the 19th and early 20th century pioneering novel concepts of advertising, modern-style department stores, customer satisfaction guarantees and employee benefit plans.
