Robert Wingfield, Esq, of Upton was born at Westhorpe, Suffolk, son Robert Wingfield, Esq and Margery Quarles, daugther of John Quarles, Gentleman of Ufford, Northamptonshire.

Robert was admitted to Pembroke College, University of Cambridge in 1549 and Gray's Inn in 1552.

Married on 21 September 1555 to Elizabeth Cecil, daughter of Richard Cecil, Esq., of Little Burghley, Northamptonshire and Jane Heckington. Robert and Elizabeth had five sons and two daughters; Sir Robert, John, Cecil, Richard, Peregrine, Elizabeth and Dorothy.

Robert Wingfield was a Burgess (M.P.) for Petersborough in 1559, 1563 and 1572.

Like his father, Robert was a substantial sheep farmer, and most contemporary references to the family, apart from those relating to a long quarrel with their neighbours the Fitzwilliams, concern the preservation and improvement of their estates. Both father and son were described as ‘great furtherers’ of religion in the bishops letters of 1564.

Robert Wingfield, Esq. of Upton was buried at St Kyneburgha, Castor. His Will was dated 30 March 1580, proved 27 June 1580 at the London Court of the PCC, PROB 11/62/279.
