After the death of her mother, Marion LaFontaine Curtis, she went to live with her Aunt Julia Ross. She married a sailor with the last name of Randall, but they divorced. She then married Frederick Phillips, and they adopted her great niece, Marion Preston.
When I went to visit their graves at Woodlawn Cemetery in 1975, the clerk showed me their burial locations in the cemetery book, and I noticed there was a young son Phillips buried in the same lot. I asked my mother about him, and she said they had a son who died at the age of 12 of scarlet fever.
The picture to the right shows Gertude holding a son, but it is not clear if he was her son by her first or second husband.
In 2010 a genealogist went to the cemetery to locate their lots, and she said the book did not show a son Phillips.
In 2013 i returned to the graves and was unable to locate them as their big stone was missing. The cemetery manager had to come out to locate the graves. We finally found the footstones which were completely covered with grass. It appears that in much of that section many of the bigger stones were missing while the footstones were left in place. It certainly would facilitate mowing the grass.
