The Rt. Rev. Theodore Harper McCrea was born March 27, 1908, the son of Rev. Christopher H. and Elizabeth P. McCrea of Minneapolis. He graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1929, and received his M.A. from Harvard University in 1930. His Bachelor of Sacred Theology was conferred by General Theological Seminary in 1943. In 1964 he was awarded the Doctor of Sacred Theology.

He was ordained Deacon by Bishop Sherrill in June, 1943 and ordained priest by Bishop Perry in December of the same year. Father McCrea served as assistant at St. Martin's, Providence, RI, before coming to Dallas and beginning a relationship with St. John's which was to last for the rest of his life. He served as priest-in-charge from 1946 until 1948 when he was elected Rector in which capacity he served until 1962. He was elected Suffragan Bishop in 1962 and served until 1975 when he retired.

Bishop McCrea served in various capacities in the diocese including Chairman of the Bishop's Council of Advice on Marriage (1947-1958); Chairman of the Department of Christian Social Relations (1948-1950); Chairman of the Board of Examining Chaplains (1953-1962); and the Standing Commission (1957-1960).

Bishop McCrea is survived by two brothers, Charles W. McCrea of Vista, California, and Robert E. McCrea of Santa Cruz, California. There are five nieces and nephews.

Preston Wiles, Ph.D.; The oblationers were Mrs. Billie Mislock, Mr. Grover Peadon, and Mr. Leon Wilensky; and the Organist was Gerald Near, M.Mus.
