| Birth: | Aug. 8, 1883 | | Death: | Oct. 30, 1914 | Poet. He is considered one of the three leading figures of early German Expressionism. Unlike the work of his compatriots Georg Heym and Georg Trakl, Stadler's poetry favors intellectual probing over despair, and is often musical in its lyrical effect. His verse appeared in two volumes, "Preludes" (1905) and "The Departure" (1914). Stadler was born in Colmar, Germany. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University from 1906 to 1908, and held academic positions in Brussels and Toronto. At the start of World War I Stadler joined the German Army as an artillery officer, and was killed in the Battle of Ypres, Belgium. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
