Moses Cockrell III, was the oldest son and second child of Thomas and Elizabeth Huey Cockrell. His name, Moses, was a family name going back to his great grandfather. Other descendants bore the name, also. Moses III was about 18 years old when he and his brothers, James, Sanford and Charles S., accompanied the parents and extended family from South Carolina in 1812 to settle land in northern Louisiana. His older sister, Lear Cealia, had married James Collie and migrated with her spouse's family to Lincoln County, Tennessee, the same year but had joined her family in Ouachita Parish by the 1860 census. Moses III, Lear Cealia and younger brothers were named in the settlement their mother made with them after their father's death. She was planning to remarry in her old age.
