At the time of Amelia's first child Doris May's birth in 1908, the father was recorded to be George Bert Farley. In the 1910 United States Census, Amelia and Doris's surnames were both recorded as Farley but by the time of her next child's birth in December of 1910, Doris's surname was recorded as Brown. This continued to be the name used in all records recorded for Doris and the only one known by her family, however it has been discovered after her death that Brown is an adopted name.

An explanation:

According to an August 25, 1908 birth record of the City Clerk's Office of Portland, ME for Doris May, the father is identified as George B Farley, born in Newport, NH and the mother as Amelia Giguere, born in Canaan, NH. The city birth record identifies George B Farley's address at the time of Doris's birth to be 95 India Street. Amelia (written "Ambrosia") Farley and Doris Farley are found next in the 1910 Census of Portland, ME, living as boarders at 98 India Street. George B Farley is not found listed at either 95 or 98 India Street or at any other address in the 1910 US Census of Portland. No marriage record for Amelia Giguere and George Farley has been found and it is likely that they were not married and never lived together. DNA research has confirmed that Amelia Giguere is Doris Brown's mother, but has not yet confirmed George Farley to be her biological father.

Found in the 1910 United States Census of Portland Maine at the 98 India Street address is the name Harry Brown, single, along with two of his siblings and their spouses, two nephews, the wife of a cousin and boarders: "Ambrosia" (Amelia) and Doris Farley and four others, all not shown to be related. By December of 1910, Harry Brown, Amelia (Giguere) and her daughter, Doris, had moved to Malden MA, where a city record shows that a daughter, Pearl Ada Brown was born. No official marriage record for Harry Brown and Amelia Giguere has been found, but family records and all official records made since Pearl's birth have identified them as married and have also identified Doris as Harry Brown's daughter. However, DNA findings have confirmed that Harry Brown is not Doris's biological father. Although he is proven to be the biological father of Doris's three younger siblings, Harry Brown's three biological children DNA match Doris as her maternal half siblings. Until official records for marriage and adoption have been found, the marriage of Harry Brown and Amelia Giguere and the adoption of Doris by Harry Brown are considered to be by common law.

Research to identify the biological father of Doris Brown is ongoing.
