Robert Phillips was a kind, gentle man who had suffered much grief by the time he met NOLIA BRYSON.

His first wife, CLARA ELIZABETH PARKER, who was probably his childhood sweetheart, died after the birth of their fourth child in 1905; little Grace had died in Feb. of 1904. Robert and Clara lived in Caney Fork, Jackson County, NC, at that time.

Robert's parents lived in Piedmont, SC, so Robert packed up his other three children--Elsie, Winnie, and Marie--and moved to Piedmont, SC.

After four years, Robert met a widow, MARTHA BISHOP TAYLOR, who had a 14-year-old daughter, Nannie Mae. Her son Arthur had died in 1902 and her husband, Johnnie, had drowned in 1899. She was not a healthy woman, but Robert Phillips loved her and married her. She passed away four years later and Robert was once more a widower.

Nolia Bryson, in Selica (Brevard), Transylvania County, NC had family also living in Piedmont who introduced her to Robert. They married in 1915 after a long-distance courtship by mail between Piedmont and Selica. After their marriage they had two daughters, Clara and Robbie. They were members of Piedmont First Baptist church and active there the remainder of their lives. Rose Hill cemetery is next to the church.
