John William Ewing was born on August 22,
1878 near Irving, Kansas, the son of William
A. and Rebecca M. Ewing. He was the
youngest of twelve children of whom six
were boys and six were girls.

While still in his infancy, his mother died
leaving him to the care of the family. He
grew to manhood on a farm northeast of
Irving, and on September 3, 1901, he was
united in marriage to Grace A. Risdon. To
this union was born three children, one of
whom died in infancy. The family continued
to live in the Pleasant Valley community
where he engaged in the farming business
until March of 1919. At that time, they
moved to Blue Rapids, Kansas, where he
began a career in the petroleum products
distribution business which was to occupy
the remainder of his life. He was a
distributor for the Standard Oil Company
until 1932 when he became associated with
the Farmers Cooperative Grain and Elevator
Company, continuing this connection until
the time of his death. The confidence of
this company in his business ability is
reflected in his election as president by the
stockholders in January 1942. He has held
this office continuously since then. His
honesty and integrity throughout his 30 years
of business made for him a wide circle of

Early in life he became affiliated with a
number of fraternal organizations. In 1916
he became a member of the Blue Valley
Masonic Lodge No. 112 at Irving, then later
transferring his membership to the Blue
Rapids Masonic Lodge No. 169. He was a
Past Master of both of these lodges. Also he
is a Past Worthy Patron of the Eastern
Chapter No.179 of the Order of the Eastern
Star at Blue Rapids. Further Masonic
affiliations in Corinthian Commandery No.
49 Marysville, Kansas.

Other affiliations were with the Knight of
the Pythias at Irving and the I.O.O.F. at Blue
Rapids. He was conscientious in all his
Fraternal work and never failed to serve each
or efficiently and well.

He along with his family became members of
the First Methodist Church at Blue Rapids
in 1929. He served on the Board of Trustees
of the church for many years.

On December 22 1949, he passed away at his
home in Blue Rapids, Kansas following a
brief illness. He leaves, his wife and two
daughters, Mrs. Ruth Houk, Minneapolis,
Minnesota and Mrs. Faye Benham, Denver,
Colorado, two grandchildren; one sister Mrs.
Sadie Benton, Harrison, Idaho; as well as
other relatives and friends.
