He was the former International Boxing Council Junior-Welterweight Champion from 1991 until abandoning the title to move up in weight-class. Born in St. Louis, he moved to Philadelphia in 1985 where he launched his professional career as a prizefighter. He earned his first world championship title chance against the Guyanese fighter Donald Allison on February 1st, 1991 and was victorious with a 12 round unanimous decision capturing the IBC Junior-Welterweight Title. He followed this with a 10 round unanimous decision over 'Irish' Micky Ward three months later. After stepping up to the Welterweight Division, Martin captured both the USBA and NABF Crowns and following his 10 round unanimous decision loss to Julio Cesar Chavez in 1997 he retired. He compiled a 34 win (12 knockout) 6 loss 1 drawn record and had the distinction of only being defeated by knockout once in his professional career. During his post-boxing life, he worked for the United States Postal Service and managed real estate in Philadelphia. He was shot to death during an altercation at one of his properties.
