Elias Leach was born in Bath County, Kentucky on May 10, 1815, and died at his home Friday morning, Aug. 31, 1906, aged 91 years, 3 months and 21 days. He came to this county in his early 30's and was among the first school teachers in Union and Middle Townships. The first school he taught here was in a house on the old Archibald Alexander farm, within a few rods of where Nicholas Kennedy now lives, just east of Lizton. The next spring he came to the Pittsboro area and taught a six month school in a cabin on the bluff of White Lick Creek where Calvin Warrick now lives. The children and grandchildren of some of his scholars live about us now. One of his old scholars is still with us - Uncle Ben Waters.
He married Susan Leak on May 17, 1839. Mr. Leach's wife died 31 years ago. Three children are left to mourn his loss: Mrs. David Baker and Mrs. James Groover, both of near Lizton, and Mrs. Chas. Foley of Danville.
He served as a justice of the peace for many years and was well posted on points of law. He was a great reader and kept well informed on current events.
He was a member of the Pittsboro Lodge of Odd Fellows and they attended the funeral which was held at his late home on Saturday. G. D. Junken conducted the services. The remains were interred in the Cundiff Cemetery north of Lizton.
