On July 1, 1853, he graduated from the United States Military Academy and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Army Artillery. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was assigned to the Regimental Quartermaster, Army of Northwestern Virginia and engaged in the battle of Bull Run. On July 17, 1862, he was promoted Major, Assistant Adjutant General for the Office of the War Department, Washington D.C. As Assistant Adjutant General under the Secretary of War, he was responsible for the organization, mustering regulations and payroll of the volunteer armies of the United States. For faithful and meretricious service during the war he was brevetted Brigadier General on March 13, 1865. He retired on November 15, 1896, with over 43 years military service.
