Vina Marie Edmonston Williams, 88, died peacefully in her sleep early Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Carrington Place in Matthews, N.C.
Mrs. Williams was born Jan. 12, 1913, in Beedeville, Ark., to Arthur Neel Edmonton and Gertrude Elizabeth Jones Edmonston. In 1932, she married Carl Edwin Williams of Hornersville, Mo. They operated a small grocery store and gas station in Rives, Mo. Their son, Edwin Neel Williams was born there in 1942. After Mr. Williams served in the Navy in World War II, the family settled in Hornersville, where they owned and operated a grocery store and ice house until Mr. Williams sudden death at age 52 in 1961. Mrs. Williams continued to operate the store for a few years, then sold it and became librarian in the county library branch in Hornersville.
She moved to Charlotte, N.C., in 1993 and lived with her son's family before moving to Carrington Place in 1994.
She was a strong and caring woman, an avid reader, a good wife and mother and a dependable friend. She had a ready smile and a good sense of humor. Whatever hand life dealt her, she played it with wit and cheerful resolve.
She leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Marilyn Lentine Williams of Charlotte; a grandson, Jonathan Lentine Williams, a student at Princeton University; a brother, William P. Edmonston of Schertz, Texas; and two sisters, Alfreida Kennedy of Willard, Mo., and Lucille York of Campbell, Mo. She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Edmonston, and two sisters, Viola Ray and Mildred Lewis.
